Cloud Feedbacks from CanESM2 to CanESM5.0 and their influence on climate sensitivity

چکیده

Abstract. The newest iteration of the Canadian Earth System Model (CanESM5.0.3) has an effective climate sensitivity (EffCS) 5.65 K, which is a 54 % increase relative to model's previous version (CanESM2 – 3.67 K), and highest all current models participating in sixth phase coupled model inter-comparison project (CMIP6). Here, we explore underlying causes behind CanESM5's increased EffCS via comparison forcing feedbacks between CanESM2 CanESM5. We find only modest differences radiative as response CO2 versions. small increases surface albedo longwave cloud feedback, well substantial SW feedback Through use area fraction output kernels, that more positive low non-low shortwave particularly with regards clouds across equatorial Pacific, subtropical extratropical free troposphere optical depth are dominant contributors sensitivity. Additional simulations prescribed sea temperatures reveal spatial pattern temperature change exerts controls on magnitude distribution low-cloud but does not fully explain results from CanESM5 consistent several other CMIP6 models, been primarily attributed changes feedbacks.

Time-Varying Climate Sensitivity from Regional Feedbacks

The sensitivity of global climate with respect to forcing is generally described in terms of the global climate feedback—the global radiative response per degree of global annualmean surface temperature change. While the global climate feedback is often assumed to be constant, its value—diagnosed from global climate models—shows substantial time variation under transient warming. Here a reformul...

The influence of regional feedbacks on circulation sensitivity

Weakening of the tropical overturning circulation in a warmer world is a robust feature in climate models. Here an idealized representation of ocean heat flux drives a Walker cell in an aquaplanet simulation. A goal of the study is to assess the influence of the Walker circulation on the magnitude and structure of climate feedbacks, as well as to global sensitivity. We compare two CO2 perturbat...
